Let's Get Started!
- 1. List all the words connected to
what you want to know,
including synonyms. Some key words will be to
general, like Sports,
when you are looking for Baseball players, and it will
take you a long time
to find your subject.
Some key words may be too specific, like dorsal
fins, when you are
looking for how whales move through water.
Some key words may be fine, but just not the
ones used by a particular
index. For instance, games may be under
recreation or in the Ss
under Sports and games.
- 2. Encyclopedias are wonderful for
giving an overview of your subject
to show where it fit in the bigger picture.
To use an Encyclopedia database you
should follow these steps.
Click on the Encyclopedia database
Type a subject's name (last name first)
Leave out beginning articles, like A,
An, and The.
- 3. Reading and overview article
will give you some other useful terms
to use as key words for further searching.
If you still have
questions try these websites:
1. Google
www.google.com:
Google
ranks each page based on how many other pages that are linked to it.
The site
you see at
the top of your list of search results are those that were linked the
most. If
you click on
the "I'm feeling lucky" button, Google tries to guess exactly what
you want
and shows you
its first web site only. Google indexes computers.
2. Yahoolians
www.yahooligans.com:
You can search
this kid-friendly search engine by key words or by subject. If you
type
in a
broad term, like turtle, Yahooligans has a way of offering you choices
which help
you
get closer to what you are looking for, like sea turtles or pet care
turtles.
3. Ask Jeeves for kids
www.ajkids.com :
You can type a whole
question into this search engine, leaving in the little connecting
words. Jeeves comes
back with some suggestions about what it thinks you want to
know and points to some
sites that different search engines found. Click on the drop
down menu for each.
Select the topic that comes closest to what you are looking for,
click on ASK
and Jeeves will take you there. It searches Yahooligans and
Education
World to find
sites it pulls up.
4. World Book Online
